Indications of Piperacillin Sodium and Tazobactam Sodium for injection:
Piperacillin Sodium and Tazobactam Sodium for injection is mainly used for the treatment of moderate to severe infections caused by piperacillin-resistant, piperacillin/tazobactam-susceptible, β-lactamase producing strains of microorganisms:
1. It is suitable for treating appendicitis (complicated by rupture or abscess) and peritonitis caused by piperacillin-resistant, β-lactamase producing strains of Escherichia coli and Bacteroides (Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides ovatus, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron ,Bacteroides vulgatus).
2. This anti-infective agent is also suitable for the treatment of uncomplicated and complicated skin and soft tissue infections (include cellulites, abscess, ischemic or diabetic foot infection) caused by piperacillin-resistant, β-lactamase producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus.
3. As a kind of anti infective drug, Piperacillin Sodium and Tazobactam Sodium is also applicable for management of postpartum endometritis or pelvic inflammatory disease caused by piperacillin-resistant, β-lactamase producing strains of Escherichia coli.
4. Indicated to treat community-acquired pneumonia (moderate severity only) caused by piperacillin-resistant, β-lactamase producing strains of Haemophilus influenzae.
5. Suitable for treating nosocomial pneumonia (moderate to severe) caused by piperacillin-resistant, β-lactamase producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, Piperacillin Sodium and Tazobactam Sodium can also be used as a treatment of Systemic infection and (or) local infection caused by susceptible bacteria.
Piperacillin Sodium and Tazobactam Sodium for injection is indicated for the treatment of the following systemic and/or local bacterial infection in which susceptible organisms have been detected or are suspected:
1. Community acquired pneumonia due to Haemophilus influenzae.
2. Intra-abdominal injections caused by piperacillin resistant β-lactamase producing strains of Escherichia coli and Bacteroides fragilis
3. Skin and skin structure injections caused by piperacillin resistant β-lactamase producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus
4. Gynaecological infections including endometriris caused by piperacillin resistant β-lactamase producing strains of Escherichia coli
5. Piperacillin/tazobactam plus an amino glycoside is indicated for bacterial infections in neutropenic patients.
While Piperacillin/tazobactam is indicated only for the conditions listed above, infections caused by piperacillin susceptible organisms are also amenable to Piperacillin/tazobactam treatment due to its piperacillin content. Therefore, the treatment of mixed infections caused by piperacillin susceptible organisms and β-lactamase producing organisms susceptible to Piperacillin/tazobactam should not require the addition of another antibiotic.
Piperacillin/tazobactam is useful in the treatment of mixed infections and in presumptive therapy prior to the availability of the results of sensitivity tests.
