What is cerebrovascular disease?
Cerebrovascular disease refers to any of a number of brain dysfunctions which are caused by disease of the blood vessels in the brain. These dysfunctions are classified as: embolisms, aneurysms, or low-flow conditions. These can result in different types of strokes.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is the most significant cause of cerebrovascular disease. It causes the vessel linings to become damaged, which the body then tries to repair by concentrating platelets in the injured area. This, in turn causes the vessels to become more narrow and stiff, making further damage to them much more likely. Thus, continued hypertension can permanently change blood vessels, making them then much more vulnerable to future changes in blood pressure.

For example, if your blood pressure is reduced, as during sleep, not enough blood travels through the narrowed blood vessels, which can cause an ischemic stroke. While, conversely, activity or excitement can cause a rise in blood pressure, which puts too much pressure on the vessels and can cause a hemorrhagic stroke.
